How to select Class Section numbers and Associated Class numbers?

What is an Associated Class number or what does it do?

Associated Class is sort of an extra page in PeopleSoft that controls credit units earned by students, class grading mode, class-level requisites, faculty workload/FTE. In the case of multiple component classes, the Associate Class also controls which labs are associated with which lecture for registration purposes. In the case of variable unit classes, the Class Association controls for how many units a specific class section is offered.

You can create a new Associated Class number anytime you create a new class section - this way all of the above-described values can be specific to the new class section.

When you add a new section of a class, the Class Section field will be blank and the Associated Class field will default to "1". Enter the Class Section number and change the Associated Class number according to the instructions below. See also How to adjust class units, grade modes, requisites, workloads/FTE?

Single Component Classes

NAVIGATION:  Main Menu > Curriculum Management > Schedule of Classes > Maintain Schedule of Classes

We recommend that every time you add and number a new class section, you also create an Associated Class number that matches that section number. For best results, each of the sections of a class should have its own corresponding Associated Class number, rather than the default value of 1.

Single Component Non-Variable Unit Class

Save the page using the button at the bottom of the page.

Non-variable units classes

Typically, single component non-variable classes are numbered in a consecutive fashion starting with 1 and increasing by 1.

Upon saving the page, the catalog-driven unit value for this class will appear to the right of the Associated Class number. In the case of non-variable unit classes, you won't need to make adjustments to the class units for students or the faculty workload/FTE, however, you can adjust class grading mode or requisites if needed. Go to How to adjust class units, grade modes, requisites, workloads/FTE? for more information on how to make these changes.

Single Component Non-Variable Unit Values

Variable unit classes

Sometimes, single component variable unit classes are numbered in a consecutive fashion starting with 1, 2, 3, etc. corresponding with their unit value. So 1-unit classes have class section numbers 1-19, 2-unit classes have class section numbers 20-21, etc. Each of these sections should have its own Associated Class number corresponding to the Class Section number.

Upon saving the page, the catalog-driven unit value range for this class will appear to the right of the Associated Class number. In the case of variable unit classes, you must make an adjustment to the class units for students and often the faculty workload/FTE as well. Additionally, you may adjust class grading mode or requisites if needed. Go to How to adjust class units, grade modes, requisites, workloads/FTE? for more information on how to make these changes.

Dual Component Classes

Examples of dual component classes are:

  • a large CHEM lecture with several smaller labs/activities associated with it,
  • a smaller KINS lecture with just one lab/activity associated with it,
  • a smaller SW activity with just one tutorial associated with it.

NAVIGATION:  Main Menu > Curriculum Management > Schedule of Classes > Maintain Schedule of Classes

In order to ensure that the students register in the correct sections and components of a dual component class, such classes follow a very specific class section and associated class numbering convention. See the table below for details:

Class Section Number - LECTUREClass Section Number - LAB/ACTIVITYAssociated Class Number - ALL
1011, 12, 13, etc.1
2021, 22, 23, etc.2
3031, 32, 33, etc.3
etc.

NOTE: The Associated Class Number shared between the associated lectures and labs is what enforces student registration in a specific lecture+lab combination. If you do not wish to enforce specific lecture+lab combinations, contact the academic scheduler for assistance.

In the case of dual component classes, you likely won't need to make adjustments to the class units for students or the faculty workload/FTE, however, you can adjust class grading mode or requisites if needed. Go to How to adjust class units, grade modes, requisites, workloads/FTE? for more information on how to make these changes.

Triple Component Classes

An example of a triple component class is:

  • a large CHEM/WLDF/ESM lecture with several smaller labs associated with it. Additionally, each lab is ALSO associated with a specific seminar/discussion.

Each student has to be registered in the large lecture, a lab, and a lab-specific seminar/discussion.

NAVIGATION:  Main Menu > Curriculum Management > Schedule of Classes > Maintain Schedule of Classes

In order to ensure that the students register in the correct sections and components of a triple component class, such classes follow a very specific class section and associated class numbering convention. See the table below for details:

Class Section Number - LECTUREClass Section Number - LABClass Section Number - DISCUSSIONAssociated Class Number - ALL
1011, 12, 13, 1415, 16, 17, 181
2021, 22, 23, 2425, 26, 27, 282
3031, 32, 33, 3435, 36, 37, 383
etc.

NOTE: The Associated Class Number shared between the associated lectures and labs is what enforces student registration in a specific lecture+lab+discussion combination. If you do not wish to enforce specific lecture+lab+discussion combinations, contact the academic scheduler for assistance.

In the case of triple component classes, you likely won't need to make adjustments to the class units for students or the faculty workload/FTE, however, you can adjust class grading mode or requisites if needed.
