GEAR Recertification Schedule
Under the new system of course certification begun in 2021-22, GEAR courses are certified/recertified for a seven-year cycle.
In order to manage a sustainable workflow, the GEAR Committee will recertify courses by GEAR area, one area per year. Below is the schedule of recertification for the new cycle.
Academic Year | GEAR Certification Area |
2021-22 | Area F |
2022-23 | GWAR (DCG - on hold until further notice) |
2023-24 | Area E |
2024-25 | Area D/AI |
2025-26 | Area C |
2026-27 | Area B |
2027-28 | Area A |
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What if a new GEAR course is approved for certification, but that area is up for recertification not long after that? Does the course need to be recertified after less than seven years?
A: Recertification of courses given new-course approval mid-cycle will be treated on a case-by-case basis. For instance, a new course approved for Area E in 2021-22 would not likely be asked to recertify with the rest of Area E in 2023-24, just two years later. In contrast, a new Area B course approved in 2021-22 would indeed likely be asked to recertify with the rest of Area B in 2026-27, five years later.
Q: If a new GE course was approved in the years just prior to the implementation of the recertification cycle, does it need to be recertified?
